Things are looking pretty sweet for electric vehicle owners in British Columbia. The BCGovernment is working with BC Hydro and FortisBC to offering provincial rebates for the purchase and installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers under the CleanBC Go Electric EV Charger Rebate Program.

Single-family homes can get up to 50% of purchase and installation costs of eligible, new, Level-2 charging equipment, to a maximum of $350 per approved charging station. Plus, for a limited time, BC Hydro is also providing a time-limited top-up to the provincial program. That’s up to $700 in rebates!

You can select to receive your rebate as a credit against your BC Hydro or Fortis BC utility bill, or as a separate rebate cheque.

So how does it all work? Here’s everything you need to know:

Owners of single-family homes, including duplexes and townhouses with private garages, or dedicated parking, can apply for a rebate for a charger purchased and installed afterSeptember26, 2019. All work must be completed, and applications submitted within 90 days after the installation of the charging station, or by March 31, 2020, whichever comes first.

Here is the list of eligible costs that you can use your rebates against:

  • Purchasing the charging station
  • Labour and construction costs for installation by a licensed electrician
  • Electrical and related permits
  • The electrical design required for the charging station

But wait, there’s the fine print. Charging stations that are eligible for the rebate must be:

  • Ordered, purchased and installed on or after September 26, 2019
  • Remember that end date? March 31, 2020
  • Purchased, not leased
  • Approved for sale and use in Canada and have cUL, cETL, and CSA certifications
  • A Level 2 charger, 208 volts or 240 volts, with a J1772 standard “J plug” (exception: TeslaWall Connector charger)
  • New, not used or refurbished
  • A permanent installation; plug-in chargers are permitted if there is an existing 240-volt outlet available
  • Not sure if your charger qualifies? Find a complete list of eligible chargers, here.

Here we go!
