2022 Kia K5 vs 2021 Toyota Camry Quick Comparison

Fresh off its introduction to the North American market in 2021, the 2022 Kia K5 returns mostly unchanged. The K5 had an impressive first year. 2021 has seen it compete with a reliable favourite of the midsized sedan segment in the Toyota Camry. This quick comparison will jump into the most important differences between the 2022 Kia K5 and 2021 Toyota Camry.

How Do They Compare?

PRICING

To start, the Toyota Camry has a lower starting price, but a higher price on the high-end trim options. On the other hand, the Kia K5 has much smaller incremental pricing between trim options. This means upgrading trims to pick and choose what best suits your needs will be easier to accomplish with the Kia, as payments and the overall price go up on a smaller basis when upgrading compared to the Camry.

ENGINE

The K5 and Camry have very comparable engine options. Both having a respectable base engine option and a very powerful upgraded engine.

Despite the similar horsepower and torque numbers, the K5 outshines the Camry. The K5 handily beats the Camry on both engine options is in acceleration, handling, and braking. With a faster 0-60 MPH, 0-100 MPH, and quarter-mile time, the clear performance winner is the Kia K5. Plus, it has higher torque output across both engines.

BRAKING

Better braking is achieved by Kia through larger brake calipers equipped on the K5. This resulted in shorter braking distances in tests by Car and Driver and MotorTrend. Finally, the K5’s superior handling is thanks to its larger tires: 245/40R19 vs. the Camry’s 235/45R18 tires. This additional width gives the K5 more contact with the road, helping with braking and handling.

FUEL EFFICIENCY

The combined fuel efficiency numbers were identical between the K5 and Camry. But the K5’s Start/Stop function (which isn’t accounted for in present EPA fuel mileage tests) improves fuel economy. It also reduces pollution by automatically turning off the engine when the vehicle is stopped in heavy traffic and at traffic lights. The Camry doesn’t offer an automatic Start/Stop engine feature or system.

PASSENGER AND TRUCK SPACE

Another area of note where the K5 excels above the Camry is in both passenger space and trunk cargo capacity. While the difference between 16 and 15.1 cubic feet isn’t massive, this can often be the difference between successfully fitting in a 2nd hockey bag or pair of golf clubs in the trunk of your vehicle versus needing to shove it in your backseat.

Speaking of seats, the K5’s extra passenger room is most felt in the front seats. Both front seats have 2 more inches of headroom and 4 more inches of legroom compared to the Camry. This adds to the comfort and luxurious feel of driving the K5.

WARRANTY

Finally, the 2022 Kia K5 offers a superior warranty in the form of a 5 year / 100,000 km comprehensive warranty. This gives owners 24 months and 40,000 km more of bumper to bumper coverage when compared to the 2021 Toyota Camry. On top of this, Kia offers 1 year or 20,000 km’s of covering the replacement of consumable items such as bulbs, wiper blades, fuses, brake pads, etc.
