Which Vehicles Qualify for the Federal EV Rebate in Canada? (2026 Guide)

Print Post

If you’re shopping for an electric vehicle in Canada, you may be eligible for the Canadian federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) of up to $5,000 provided by the Government of Canada.

This incentive helps reduce the upfront cost of many electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and is applied directly at the dealership at the time of purchase or lease. That means no extra work for you.

But not every EV qualifies. The program has specific vehicle eligibility rules and price limits, which means only certain models are approved.

On this page you’ll find is a simple guide to which vehicles currently qualify for the federal EV rebate in Canada. Plus, you’ll also find the key details of the EVAP program.

Key Details of the Federal EVAP Program

Replacing the old iZEV program, the EVAP offers up to $5,000 for battery-electric/fuel-cell vehicles and $2,500 for plug-in hybrids, generally for vehicles under $50,000.

  • Eligibility: New, light-duty (under 8,500 lbs) EVs, including battery-electric (BEV), fuel-cell (FCEV), and plug-in hybrids (PHEV).
  • Price Caps: Vehicles must have a base model MSRP under $50,000, with higher-priced trims up to $60,000, or a maximum final transaction price of $50,000 (unless made in Canada).
  • Incentive Amounts:
    • $5,000: For passenger cars with a battery capacity of 15 kWh or more, or long-range PHEVs.
    • $2,500: For shorter-range PHEVs.
  • Timeline: Runs from March 31, 2026, to March 31, 2031.
  • Process: The incentive is applied at the point-of-sale through participating dealerships, not by the buyer afterward.

How the Federal EV Rebate Works

The federal EV incentive is designed to make electric vehicles more affordable.

Key details include:

  • Up to $5,000 for fully electric vehicles (BEV)
  • Up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV)
  • The incentive is applied at the dealership at the time of purchase or lease
  • Lease incentives vary depending on lease term length

Vehicles must also meet the program’s maximum price limits to qualify.

EV Rebates Can Combine with Manufacturer Incentives

One of the best things about the federal EV rebate is that it can often stack with manufacturer promotions, financing offers, or dealership incentives.

For example, automakers frequently offer:

  • Low interest financing on EVs
  • Lease cash incentives
  • Seasonal promotions
  • dealer discounts on in-stock vehicles

When these incentives combine with the $5,000 federal rebate, the result can be significantly lower monthly payments or purchase prices.
